Pillar 5: NUMBER AND PATTERN
[143:1] "The universe is written in the language of
mathematics."
[143:2] --- Galileo Galilei
[143:3] "E = mc² is the most famous equation in physics."
[143:4] --- Popular observation
[143:5] "An equation is a balance of forces."
[143:6] --- Mathematical intuition
[143:7] [143:1] The Hebrew חת (Chat) can mean "fear"---and
equations inspire awe, even terror, as they compress vast truths into
minimal symbols.
[143:8] [143:2] An equation is a statement of equality---an
assertion that two expressions have the same value. The equals sign is
the pivot; what stands on either side must balance. An equation is
cosmic justice in mathematical form: what the left side gives, the right
side must receive.
[143:9] [143:3] "The universe is written in the language of
mathematics." Galileo's claim is now scientific orthodoxy. The laws of
physics are equations; to understand nature is to understand its
equations; the universe is not merely describable by math---it may be
math.
[143:10] [143:4] "E = mc²" distills enormous truth into
minimal form. Energy equals mass times the speed of light squared. From
this equation: nuclear power, nuclear weapons, the sun's fire, the
convertibility of matter and energy. Five symbols; civilization-changing
consequences.
[143:11] [FIGURE 143.1: The equation E = mc², each symbol
annotated---Energy, equals, mass, times, the speed of light, squared.]
[143:5] "An equation is a balance of forces." The metaphor is apt.
Forces must balance; if one side is heavier, the scale tips; the
equation is false. Solving an equation is finding the values that
maintain balance. The unknown is found by what the balance requires.
[143:12] [143:6] Types of equations: Algebraic: polynomial
relations (x² + y² = r²) Differential: involving rates of change (F =
ma, rewritten) Integral: involving accumulations Partial differential:
involving multiple changing variables Each type has its domain; together
they describe nearly everything.
[143:13] [143:7] The beauty of equations: physicists judge
equations by beauty---elegance, simplicity, symmetry. Dirac's equation
for the electron was beautiful before it was verified. Maxwell's
equations for electromagnetism are considered "the most beautiful
equations in physics." Beauty is a guide to truth.
[143:14] [143:8] Equations are not reality; they are models of
reality. The map is not the territory; the equation is not the
phenomenon. But equations are good maps---accurate, predictive,
compressible. When the equation works, it works with astonishing
precision.
[143:15] [143:9] The Omni Function (Gate 4) is an equation: E =
L(C). Experience equals Love applied to Consciousness. This is not
physics (yet?) but metaphysics in equational form. The format asserts:
there is a lawful relationship; the quantities balance; understanding is
possible.
[143:16] [143:10] Seek the equation. Behind the complexity, what
is the simple relation? Behind the phenomenon, what balances what? The
equation does not explain in the sense of telling a story; it explains
in the sense of revealing structure. The equation is the skeleton of
truth.
