Pillar 5: NUMBER AND PATTERN
[121:1] "Geometry is knowledge of the eternally existent."
[121:2] --- Plato
[121:3] "God geometrizes continually."
[121:4] --- Attributed to Plato
[121:5] "The book of nature is written in the language of
mathematics,
[121:6] and its characters are triangles, circles, and other
geometric figures."
[121:7] --- Galileo
[121:8] [121:1] The Hebrew זל (Zal) means "to drip" or "to
flow"---and sacred geometry is the study of how form flows from the
formless through geometric principles.
[121:9] [121:2] Sacred geometry is the recognition that certain
shapes and proportions are not arbitrary but fundamental---embedded in
the structure of nature, encoded in ancient architecture, resonant with
human consciousness. The circle, the spiral, the triangle, the pentagon:
these are not merely useful shapes but archetypal patterns through which
creation manifests.
[121:10] [121:3] The circle is the beginning---unity, wholeness,
the boundary that defines without corner or break. The line through the
center (the diameter) creates polarity: above and below, left and right.
From circle and line, all other forms emerge through compass and
straightedge, the tools of the sacred geometer.
[121:11] [121:4] The vesica piscis---the "fish bladder"---is
formed when two equal circles overlap, each passing through the other's
center. This almond-shaped intersection is the womb from which new forms
are born: the equilateral triangle, the square root of three, the fish
of Christ. It is the geometry of duality producing trinity.
[121:12] [FIGURE 121.1: The vesica piscis---two overlapping
circles with the almond-shaped intersection highlighted. Caption: "The
vesica piscis: the womb of sacred geometry."] [121:5] The Platonic
solids---tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, dodecahedron, icosahedron---are
the only five regular polyhedra possible. Each has equal faces of the
same regular polygon. Plato associated them with the elements:
tetrahedron with fire, cube with earth, octahedron with air, icosahedron
with water, dodecahedron with the cosmos. Geometry encodes physics.
[121:13] [121:6] The Flower of Life is a pattern of overlapping
circles forming a hexagonal lattice. From it can be extracted the Seed
of Life, the Tree of Life, the Metatron's Cube, and all the Platonic
solids. It appears in ancient temples from Egypt to China, a geometric
lingua franca suggesting that its designers understood something
universal.
[121:14] [121:7] Sacred geometry operates at every scale. The
spiral of the galaxy, the spiral of the nautilus shell, the spiral of
the DNA helix---all follow the same logarithmic principle. The hexagonal
cells of the honeycomb, the hexagonal columns of basalt, the hexagonal
storm on Saturn---geometry repeats across domains, suggesting an
underlying code.
[121:15] [121:8] Why is geometry sacred? Because it reveals the
invisible architecture of the visible. The forms we see are
manifestations of principles we don't see. To study sacred geometry is
to perceive the Platonic Forms (Gate 29) in their geometric expression,
to see through appearance to structure.
[121:16] [121:9] The mandala is sacred geometry for meditation.
The intricate, symmetrical designs of Tibetan thangkas, Hindu yantras,
and Gothic rose windows are not merely decorative; they are tools for
focusing attention and revealing the geometry of consciousness. To
contemplate a mandala is to align mind with cosmic order.
[121:17] [121:10] "God geometrizes continually." The universe
is not a chaos onto which we impose pattern; it is a cosmos in which
pattern is inherent. The geometer discovers rather than invents. To
learn sacred geometry is to learn the language in which the Creator
speaks---a language of form, proportion, and eternal relationship.
