Pillar 5: NUMBER AND PATTERN

[120:1] "Any periodic function can be expressed as a sum of
sine waves."
[120:2] --- Joseph Fourier
[120:3] "The material world and the divine world are related

[120:4] as a complex waveform is related to its component

frequencies."

[120:5] --- From the OOMNI system
[120:6] "Analysis is the passage from the whole to the parts;

[120:7] synthesis is the passage from the parts to the whole."

[120:8] --- Traditional definition

[120:9] [120:1] Any complex wave can be decomposed into simple

sine waves---and vice versa.

[120:10] [120:2] This is Fourier's theorem, one of the most

powerful ideas in mathematics. A jagged waveform, a spoken word, a

musical chord, an image, a heartbeat---anything that varies in time or

space can be analyzed into a sum of pure sine waves of different

frequencies, amplitudes, and phases. The complex is built from the

simple; the many are secretly one.

[120:11] [120:3] The inverse is equally true: combine sine waves

and you can build any waveform you like. A synthesizer does

this---adding frequencies to construct sounds that never existed in

nature. Fourier synthesis is creation from first principles: start with

the simplest possible oscillation and, by combination, generate

arbitrary complexity.

[120:12] [120:4] The OOMNI system proposes that Fourier analysis

is the bridge between the material and divine toroids (Gate 84). The

material world is the complex waveform---all the interference patterns,

all the manifold phenomena we experience. The divine world is the realm

of pure frequencies---the Platonic Forms, the simple harmonics that,

combined, produce the complexity of manifestation.

[120:13] [FIGURE 120.1: A complex waveform decomposed into its

component sine waves. The material world as composite; the Platonic

realm as pure frequencies.] [120:5] This is not merely metaphor. The

brain performs Fourier-like analysis constantly. The cochlea in the ear

decomposes sound into frequency components. The visual cortex extracts

spatial frequencies from images. Perception is analysis; the brain takes

the complex signal and finds the simple components. We literally

decompose reality into its harmonics.

[120:14] [120:6] Bentov suggested that meditation is a kind of

inverse Fourier synthesis. The ordinary mind is noisy---many

frequencies, incoherent phases, complex waveform. Meditation

progressively eliminates frequencies, simplifies the signal, until in

the deepest states only the fundamental remains---or perhaps no

frequency at all, pure DC, the unmoved mover.

[120:15] [120:7] The two-toroid model can be understood through

Fourier lens. The divine toroid contains the "frequency domain"---all

possible pure frequencies, eternally present. The material toroid

contains the "time domain"---complex waveforms playing out in

sequence. The Glass (Gate 85) is where the transformation occurs, where

frequency becomes time and time becomes frequency.

[120:16] [120:8] Music is the experience of Fourier synthesis. A

chord is a combination of frequencies; the ear analyzes it; the brain

experiences "harmony." The study of which frequency combinations sound

harmonious and which discordant is the study of which Forms combine

gracefully. Plato was right: music is the audible form of mathematics.

[120:17] [120:9] The Hebrew word for this gate---Zach---means

"pure, clear." Fourier analysis is purification: separating the

complex into its pure components. The spiritual path can be understood

as Fourier analysis of the self---identifying the component frequencies

(desires, fears, beliefs, identities), clarifying each, and ultimately

simplifying toward the fundamental tone of pure awareness.

[120:18] [120:10] The universe speaks in waves. Matter is

standing waves of energy; light is electromagnetic waves; even gravity

propagates as waves in spacetime. To understand waves, to analyze and

synthesize them, is to understand the language of creation. Fourier gave

us the grammar; now we must learn what the cosmos is saying.
