Pillar 5: NUMBER AND PATTERN
[115:1] "All is number."
[115:2] --- Pythagoras
[115:3] "The consideration of which numbers are concordant and
which not,
[115:4] and why in each case\...
[115:5] don't we know that all of this is a prelude to the song
itself?"
[115:6] --- Plato, Republic 531c-532a
[115:7] "Number rules the universe."
[115:8] --- Pythagorean motto
[115:9] [115:1] Number is the first language of the cosmos.
[115:10] [115:2] Before words, before images, before thought as
we know it---there is number. The universe counts itself into existence:
one, two, three\... Each number is a principle, a quality, a divine
name. The Pythagoreans were not being mystical when they said "all is
number"; they were being precise. Structure, relationship, ratio,
proportion---these are the bones of reality, and they are numerical.
[115:11] [115:3] Consider: why does the octave sound harmonious?
Because the ratio 1:2 is the simplest possible relationship between
different pitches. Why does the fifth sound consonant? Because 2:3 is
the next-simplest ratio. The ear perceives mathematical relationships
directly, translating number into sensation. Music is audible
mathematics; mathematics is silent music.
[115:12] [115:4] Plato insisted that tuning theory be studied
"not for the sake of practical harmonics but to learn which numbers are
concordant and which not, and why." He was not interested in building
better lyres; he was interested in understanding the structure of
existence. The musical ratios were, for him, a window into the
Forms---eternal patterns that govern all manifestation.
[115:13] [FIGURE 115.1: The Pythagorean tetractys: ten dots
arranged in a triangle (1+2+3+4=10). This figure was so sacred to the
Pythagoreans that they swore oaths by it.] [115:5] The first four
numbers contain all music: 1:2 (octave), 2:3 (fifth), 3:4 (fourth).
These three intervals---and these alone---were considered "perfect
consonances" by the ancients. The tetractys (1+2+3+4=10) was sacred
because it contained the ratios of harmony. The Pythagoreans swore their
most binding oaths "by him who gave us the tetractys, which contains
the fount and root of ever-flowing nature."
[115:14] [115:6] Numbers have qualities. One is unity, the
source, the undifferentiated. Two is polarity, division, the first
Other. Three is reconciliation, the child of One and Two, the first
synthesis. Four is stability, the square, the solid. These are not
arbitrary associations; they are intrinsic to number itself. Numerology,
rightly understood, is the contemplation of these qualities.
[115:15] [115:7] McClain's research reveals that Plato encoded
an entire cosmology in musical mathematics. The "sovereign number" of
the Republic, the world-soul of the Timaeus, the cities of Magnesia and
Atlantis---all are musical-mathematical constructions. Plato was hiding
the mysteries in plain sight, knowing that only those with ears to hear
would understand.
[115:16] [115:8] The integers are not the only numbers, but they
are the originals. Fractions are relationships between integers;
irrationals are limits of integer relationships; imaginaries extend
number into another dimension. But the integers---1, 2, 3\...---are the
archetypes, the atomic units of quantity from which all else is built.
[115:17] [115:9] In the OOMNI system, number is how the One
knows itself. Each integer is a distinct perspective, a unique way of
dividing unity. The dance of numbers is the play of consciousness with
itself. When you count, you participate in the primal act of creation:
the One becoming many so that it can know itself as One.
[115:18] [115:10] "All is number" does not mean reality is
cold or mechanical. It means reality is structured, meaningful,
intelligible. The fact that the universe can be described mathematically
is evidence that it is not random---it is ordered, and that order is
knowable. To learn mathematics is to learn the language in which the
cosmos speaks.
