Pillar 4: THE MATERIAL WORLD
[112:1] "The field is the sole governing agency of the
particle."
[112:2] --- Albert Einstein
[112:3] "There is no place in this new kind of physics both
for the field and matter,
[112:4] for the field is the only reality."
[112:5] --- Albert Einstein
[112:6] "Action at a distance is impossible."
[112:7] --- Classical physics principle
[112:8] [112:1] Fields are the medium of forces---invisible
structures pervading space through which particles interact.
[112:9] [112:2] Classical physics imagined particles acting at a
distance---one body affecting another across empty space. But how? What
carries the influence? Field theory provides the answer: space is not
empty; it is filled with fields; particles create fields; fields affect
other particles. The interaction is local, not instantaneous.
[112:10] [112:3] "The field is the sole governing agency of the
particle." Einstein's vision elevated fields to primacy. Particles are
not fundamental; fields are. Particles are excitations in
fields---ripples in the underlying reality. What we call an electron is
a localized disturbance in the electron field.
[112:11] [112:4] "The field is the only reality." Einstein
went further: matter reduces to field. The particle is not a thing but a
field configuration. The solidity of matter is the stability of certain
field patterns. There is no stuff other than field; field is what there
is.
[112:12] [FIGURE 112.1: Lines of force radiating from a
charge---the field made visible, the invisible structure that carries
the interaction.] [112:5] The electromagnetic field carries light and
all electromagnetic interactions. The gravitational field carries
gravity. The Higgs field gives particles mass. The quantum fields of the
Standard Model underlie all known particles. Reality is a symphony of
overlapping, interacting fields.
[112:13] [112:6] Quantum field theory combines fields with
quantum mechanics. The result: particles can be created and destroyed
(they are excitations, not permanent things); the vacuum is not empty
(it seethes with virtual particles); and the mathematics becomes
extraordinarily precise and successful.
[112:14] [112:7] The Akashic field, proposed by Ervin Laszlo and
rooted in Eastern traditions, is a theoretical information field---a
field that stores all information from all events. It is speculative,
not established physics; but it suggests that field theory might extend
beyond matter to include information and consciousness.
[112:15] [112:8] Fields solve the action-at-a-distance problem.
The sun doesn't magically reach out and grab the Earth; the sun creates
a gravitational field; the field extends through space; the Earth
responds to the local field. All interaction is local; fields carry
influence across distances.
[112:16] [112:9] The field is not directly perceived. You see
particles (or their effects); you infer fields. But the inference is
powerful: fields explain otherwise inexplicable coordination,
synchronization, interaction. The invisible governs the visible; the
field governs the particle.
[112:17] [112:10] Think in fields. Not isolated objects but
interacting fields. Not separate particles but configurations of
underlying continuity. The field view is a step toward seeing reality as
the mystics see it: interconnected, interpenetrating, one fabric wearing
many patterns.
