Pillar 4: THE MATERIAL WORLD

[84:1] "As above, so below; as below, so above."
[84:2] --- The Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus
[84:3] "Our universe is a flattened form of a torus,

[84:4] constantly turning itself inside out."

[84:5] --- Itzhak Bentov, Stalking the Wild Pendulum
[84:6] "In my Father's house are many mansions."
[84:7] --- John 14:2

[84:8] [84:1] The universe has the shape of a donut. Actually,

two donuts.

[84:9] [84:2] The Hebrew הו (Ho) means "Alas!" or

"Woe!"---and there is grief in the splitting of unity into duality.

The two toroids are the cosmos lamenting its own division, even as that

division makes love possible. This is Bentov's central model, arrived

at through a combination of physics, meditation, and visionary insight.

The material universe---spacetime as we know it---forms a torus (donut

shape) that is constantly turning itself inside out. Matter flows from a

central point (the "cosmic egg" or white hole), expands outward,

curves around, and eventually falls back in (the black hole), only to

re-emerge and repeat the cycle. This is the material toroid.

[84:10] [84:3] But there is a second toroid, interpenetrating

the first. This is the divine realm---the world of Platonic Forms,

eternal patterns, the Father-principle in geometric expression. It too

is a torus, but oriented differently, and composed not of matter but of

what we might call "meaning" or "information" or

"consciousness-structure." The two toroids share the same central axis

but flow in complementary ways.

[84:11] [84:4] Where the two toroids intersect, matter and

meaning touch. This is where physics meets metaphysics, where brain

meets mind, where the material becomes conscious. Bentov called this

zone the region where "light turns back on itself"---where the strict

laws of spacetime become permeable to influences from the eternal realm.

[84:12] [FIGURE 84.1: Two interpenetrating torus shapes. One

labeled "Material Toroid" (flow of matter through spacetime), one

labeled "Divine Toroid" (realm of forms/consciousness). Their

intersection zone labeled "The Glass."] [84:5] The material toroid

operates according to physics: matter expands from the Big Bang, evolves

through cosmic time, eventually collapses back into singularity. It is

subject to entropy, causality, the arrow of time. Within it, we are

born, live, die, decay. It is the Mother-realm in geometric

expression---substance, flux, transformation.

[84:13] [84:6] The divine toroid operates according to different

laws---or rather, is the source of laws. The mathematical truths, the

Platonic Forms, the eternal archetypes: these exist in the divine toroid

and project into the material one. Evolution in the material realm

moves toward forms that exist eternally in the divine realm. The future,

in a sense, calls to the present.

[84:14] [84:7] This model solves ancient puzzles. How can

eternal truths (like mathematics) exist in a temporal universe? They

don't---they exist in the divine toroid and are accessed by minds in

the material one. How can consciousness (apparently non-physical)

interact with matter? Through the intersection zone, where the two

toroids share a common boundary.

[84:15] [84:8] The model also explains mystical experience. In

meditation, consciousness withdraws from the material toroid and

approaches the divine. The deeper the meditation, the closer to the

intersection zone---where time slows, where archetypes become visible,

where the meditator contacts realities that transcend ordinary

spacetime. The "tunnel of light" reported in near-death experiences

may be passage through the central axis of the toroids.

[84:16] [84:9] Think of a jelly donut: the dough is the material

toroid, the jelly is the divine toroid (actually extending both inside

and outside). Where dough and jelly meet, flavors mingle. The human

being, standing at this boundary, tastes both.

[84:17] [84:10] "In my Father's house are many mansions." The

two-toroid model does not limit us to one universe. The same structure

can repeat at different scales, can generate multiple universes, can

nest within larger toroids. The cosmos is vaster than one duality---but

understanding one duality is the beginning of understanding all.
