VIBRATION
[28:1] "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with
God,
[28:2] and the Word was God."
[28:3] --- John 1:1
[28:4] "By the word of the LORD were the heavens made;
[28:5] and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth."
[28:6] --- Psalm 33:6
[28:7] "Our whole reality is based on one common factor,
[28:8] and that is periodic change, or sound."
[28:9] --- Itzhak Bentov, Stalking the Wild Pendulum
[28:10] [28:1] In the beginning was vibration.
[28:11] [28:2] Before light, before matter, before space and
time as we know them---there was the Word. But "word" here is not
merely speech; it is Logos, the principle of ordered expression, and at
its root, Logos is vibration. Every word is a pattern of sound waves;
every sound wave is periodic motion; every periodic motion is the
universe doing what it fundamentally does: oscillating.
[28:12] [28:3] Bentov demonstrated this with elegant simplicity:
reality is vibratory at every level. Atoms vibrate. Molecules vibrate.
Cells vibrate. Hearts beat, brains pulse, planets orbit, galaxies
rotate. From the quantum foam to the cosmic web, nothing is
still---everything oscillates between states, and this oscillation is
the primordial sound, the first vibration, the Word that speaks worlds
into being.
[28:13] [28:4] The Hindus call this Shabda Brahman---God as
Sound---and identify it with the syllable AUM (or OM). AUM is not an
arbitrary sound; it is considered the sonic signature of creation
itself, containing all other sounds the way white light contains all
colors. When properly intoned, AUM is said to resonate with the
fundamental frequency of existence.
[28:14] [FIGURE 28.1: A waveform---simple sine wave---with the
notation "All complexity emerges from the interaction of simple
waves."] [28:5] Sound creates form. This is not metaphor; it is
physics. Pass sound through a medium---sand on a metal plate, water in a
bowl---and patterns appear. Chladni figures, cymatics: geometry emerging
from vibration. The patterns are not random; they are determined by the
frequency and the container. Change the frequency, change the pattern.
Matter, in this view, is vibration stabilized into standing waves.
[28:15] [28:6] The Kabbalists speak of God creating through
letters---the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet, combined in various
ways, generate all things. But letters are sounds. The Sefer
Yetzirah describes creation as divine speech: God speaks, and worlds
emerge. The letters are not arbitrary signs but vibrational patterns,
each with its own quality and power.
[28:16] [28:7] Here is the deep connection: consciousness and
vibration are intimately related. Thought is electrical activity---waves
in the brain. Perception is the translation of external vibrations
(light waves, sound waves) into internal experience. The bridge between
mind and matter is not mysterious if both are understood as patterns of
vibration at different frequencies and scales.
[28:17] [28:8] The materialist says: vibration is just matter
moving. The idealist says: matter is just vibration perceived. This book
says: both perspectives are partial. Vibration is the interface, the
common ground, the language that consciousness and matter share. When
the Word is spoken, vibration is what speaks it; when the Word is heard,
vibration is what hears.
[28:18] [28:9] Every mantra, every prayer, every song is an echo
of the First Vibration. When you chant AUM, you are not merely imitating
a sound---you are participating in the fundamental act of creation.
Sound is not passive; sound does things. This is why sacred traditions
guard their mantras: words have power because vibration shapes reality.
[28:19] [28:10] "In the beginning was the Word" is not poetry.
It is cosmology. The universe is a song singing itself into existence,
and you are one of the notes.
