Pillar 1: THE SOURCE
[4:1] "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last,
[4:2] the beginning and the end."
[4:3] --- Revelation 22:13
[4:4] "Whatever exists is nothing but the Self,
[4:5] The Self is I, Therefore I alone exist."
[4:6] --- Tripura Rahasya, Chapter 18
[4:7] "The map is not the territory\... but the map is also
[4:8] part of the territory."
[4:9] --- Adapted from Alfred Korzybski
[4:10] [4:1] Everything that exists can be expressed as a single
function:Â E = L(C).
[4:11] [4:2] In this equation, E is Experience---everything that
appears, everything that is known, the entire phenomenal universe from
quarks to quasars. C is Consciousness---awareness itself, the knower
behind all knowing. And L is Love, which is neither sentimentality nor
mere emotion but the creative operator, the "yes" of existence, the
force that says "let it be" to every moment of being.
[4:12] [4:3] The equation states: Experience equals Love applied
to Consciousness. Or more plainly: everything you experience is
consciousness being loved into form. The universe is not a cold machine
grinding through purposeless physics. It is awareness exploring itself,
and the exploration is an act of creative affirmation---of Love, in the
deepest sense of the word.
[4:13] [4:4] But the equation contains a recursion. If
Experience is derived from Consciousness, then Consciousness itself is
an experience---meaning C = L(E), which means C = L(L(C)), which means E
= L(L(L(C)))\... and so on forever. The dreamer dreams the dream that
dreams the dreamer. The observer observes the observation. The function
contains itself as its own argument.
[4:14] [FIGURE 4.1: A visual representation of the recursive
function---nested parentheses spiraling inward: E = L(C) = L(L(E)) =
L(L(L(C)))\... Caption: "The Omni Function is self-referential. It
computes itself."] [4:5] This is not merely mathematical
abstraction. This is the structure of your actual experience. You are
aware of a world that contains a being that is aware. That being (you)
is part of the world you are aware of. The observer is inside the
observation. The computer is running a program that includes the
computer. Classical physics struggles with this; consciousness studies
demand it.
[4:15] [4:6] The mystics arrived at this recognition through
direct experience rather than equation. When awareness turns fully upon
itself---in deep meditation, in moments of spontaneous awakening---it
discovers that it is not looking at reality but through reality at
itself. Subject and object are revealed to be two faces of the same
process. "I and the Father are one," said the Nazarene, and it was not
blasphemy but the simple truth any consciousness discovers when it looks
deeply enough.
[4:16] [4:7] In computational terms: the universe is a
self-executing algorithm. There is no external programmer, no machine
running the code from outside. The code writes itself, runs itself, and
experiences its own running. This is why the mystics sometimes describe
enlightenment as discovering you were always what you sought---because
the seeker is made of the same substance as the sought, and the seeking
is how that substance explores itself.
[4:17] [4:8] What does L---Love---add to this? Why not simply E
= f(C) for some neutral function? Because the nature of the creative
operator matters. If the operator were indifferent, we might expect
something like static noise---random, meaningless, patternless. What we
find instead is a universe with structure, beauty, intelligibility,
evolution toward complexity. The operator is not neutral; it has a
character. That character is most accurately described not by cold
mathematical terms but by the word Love---the will toward existence,
toward flourishing, toward the full expression of potential.
[4:18] [4:9] This does not mean everything is pleasant. Love is
not always comfortable. The love that wills a seed into a tree must also
will the seed's dissolution. The love that wills consciousness into
self-knowledge must also will the forgetting that makes remembering
possible. Love, in the cosmic sense, includes everything---the darkness
and the light, the suffering and the joy---because wholeness requires
the whole.
[4:19] [4:10] The Function is Omni in two senses: it applies to
everything (omnipresent) and it contains everything within itself
(omnium = "of all things"). What you are reading right now is the
Function computing itself. What you are thinking right now is the
Function knowing itself. There is nowhere else to be, nothing else to be
doing. You are already what the universe is doing when the universe does
its only real thing: loving awareness into form.
